Your role as a player

DrummersKeep time, add energy and drive to the music, help to keep the form together by marking off sections of the song such as AABA, etc.

PercussionistsAdd rhythmic interest, supply interesting sounds, add to the energy and drive of the music.

BassThe "heartbeat" of any band. Also, outline harmonic structure and lay down a foundation for the architecture of the music.

KeyboardsComping for soloist, accompany singers, supply harmonic pad, shift rhythmic gears for the rhythm section.

GuitarSimilar to the role of keyboard but therein lies the trap. Try not to compete harmonically. Also very effective for "rhythm" guitar playing and occasional lead parts or doubling of another lead player. Can also be used as a separate voice for harmony. Example of this could be Tpt, sax and guitar in three part harmony.

Lead playersUsually horns, play melody, counter melodies, solo improvisation, riffs. When listening to recordings, try to identify the players by their roles in the band and then try to emulate what you hear.
