Slow vs. fast

Oftentimes, when we hear someone playing a ballad it seems as if the energy dissipates, sort of like air leaking out of a tire. Conversely, when tempos are fast, everyone playing appears to get very tense. Both of these situations can be rectified. Here's something to consider:

Tempo and Intensity are inversely proportional

So, when playing a ballad, try to maintain intensity through concentration. In other words, this is not the time to relax and when playing a fast tempo, release the tension, relax let the intensity ease. I think this will help you to think clearly in both situations and you'll have a better chance of making music. You'll also find that the ballads won't "drag" and the up tempos won't "rush."
