How to set musical
goals
Having the desire to succeed is one thing and getting there is
another. How is it that some make it and others don't?
Granted, there are many factors that have a bearing
on success. One has to do with learning how to set
reachable goals.
Goals without definition are often unreachable. Some
examples might be: "I want to be rich".
Or, "I want to be famous".
Let's learn from J. Clement Stone, the insurance magnate
who stated that he had a plan for each year of his
life. He would divide each year into four 13-week
segments. He would then assign one goal for each week.
At the end of each quarter, he would evaluate his
progress. He stated that he rarely accomplished every
goal, but that he did, in fact, make progress.
Reachable goals for musicians might be:
Learn
a new tune each week
Learn
a new voicing each week
Learn
to transpose a familiar song into a new key
Transcribe
a solo
Try writing out a list of 13 reachable goals and see
what happens at the end of that 13 week period of
time.
